IMPORTANT

Pterophyllum scalare, also sold as Avatar Lamborghini, is a captive-bred variety of the freshwater angelfish, an iconic cichlid from the calm waters of South America. Its tall body, extended fins and contrasting pattern make it a standout fish for planted aquariums. Despite its delicate appearance, it remains territorial, especially when pairs form and spawning begins. This variety is very common in the aquarium trade and suits aquarists who can provide warm, stable, high-quality water in a sufficiently tall aquarium. Its elegant appearance is best supported by careful stocking and consistent maintenance.

General species description

Pterophyllum scalare belongs to the large South American cichlids of the genus Pterophyllum. In the aquarium trade, it is generally marketed as a selectively bred form of Pterophyllum scalare rather than as a separate species. Its laterally compressed body allows it to move among roots and aquatic plants. Young fish usually live in groups, while adults establish a hierarchy and breeding pairs defend a spawning territory. Its temperament is generally peaceful outside breeding, but it can become noticeably territorial. Successful care depends on warm water, effective filtration and a layout with visual barriers. Like other freshwater angelfish, it may swallow very small fish that fit into its mouth.

Geographic origin and biotope

Wild Pterophyllum scalare comes from the Amazon Basin, including areas of Brazil, Colombia and Peru; the species is also associated with other northern Amazon drainages depending on the population considered. It inhabits slow or moderately flowing waters in floodplains, backwaters and vegetated marginal areas. The water may be clear, amber-coloured or lightly stained by organic matter. The habitat commonly includes submerged roots, branches, leaf litter and dense vegetation. Depth varies between sites, but the fish often uses the middle to upper water column, where its tall body is well suited to navigating among plants and wood.

Precise location and local name

Within its natural range, Pterophyllum scalare is associated with several tributaries and quiet sectors of the Amazon system rather than with one single river. Local names vary among countries and riverside communities. In Brazilian Portuguese, the name peixe-bandeira is commonly used, while the English aquarium trade generally uses freshwater angelfish. In French, scalaire and ange de mer d’eau douce are common names. Avatar Lamborghini is a commercial name connected to a captive-bred line and its appearance, not to a specific geographic population. This distinction helps separate a trade variety from a wild locality form.

Appearance and physical characteristics

Pterophyllum scalare has a very tall, laterally compressed body supported by long dorsal and anal fins that create its triangular profile. The Avatar Lamborghini variety displays selectively bred coloration, with metallic tones and contrasting markings that vary between lines and individuals. Its pelvic fins are filamentous, the pectoral fins are delicate and the mouth is terminal. Adults may reach about 15 cm in body length, while their total height including the fins is considerably greater. This shape calls for a tall aquarium rather than simply a long one. Colours are often strongest in stable water, moderate lighting and a darker layout that reduces stress.

General diet

Pterophyllum scalare is an omnivore and readily accepts prepared foods, but a varied diet supports health and colour development. A suitable staple can include quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis and mosquito larvae. Small amounts of plant-based food may also be offered, although they should not dominate the diet. Juveniles benefit from frequent, appropriately sized meals, while adults should receive controlled portions to prevent obesity. Small regular feedings are preferable to overloading the aquarium. Live or frozen foods should come from a reliable source and should be used as supplements rather than as the sole food.

Essential data

  • Native river name: Several tributaries of the Amazon Basin; no single river defines the species.
  • Local name used: Peixe-bandeira in Brazil; freshwater angelfish in the English-speaking trade.
  • Origin of the scientific name: The genus and species names use Greek and Latin roots.
  • Etymology of the full name: Pterophyllum means “fin-leaf”; scalare refers to a ladder-like form, alluding to vertical bands.
  • Common/vernacular names: Freshwater angelfish, scalaire, ange de mer d’eau douce, Avatar Lamborghini.
  • Family: Cichlidae
  • Subfamily: Cichlinae
  • Name pronunciation: ter-oh-FILL-um SKA-lar-ee
  • Discovery: Described by Schultze in 1823.
  • Maximum adult size: About 15 cm body length; total height is greater with the fins.
  • Water temperature and pH: 24 to 30 °C; approximately pH 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Watercourse appearance and surrounding vegetation: Slow water, submerged roots, branches, leaf litter and dense marginal vegetation.
  • Typical tankmates: Medium-sized tetras, adult corydoras, sturdy small loricariids and other peaceful fish of comparable size.
  • Temperament and behaviour: Usually peaceful, schooling when young, territorial as a pair and during breeding.
  • Water depth: Variable; it mainly uses the middle and upper parts of the water column.
  • Sexual dimorphism: Difficult to determine outside breeding; the genital papilla is more informative in mature spawning fish.
  • Bottom structure and flow: Sandy or muddy bottom, plant debris and low to moderate current.

For greater success

To keep Pterophyllum scalare successfully, choose a tall, mature aquarium with gentle but effective filtration, sturdy plants and roots that create open swimming areas. Keep the temperature stable at about 26 to 28 °C, avoid sudden changes and monitor water quality. Very small tankmates may be viewed as prey once the fish mature. A varied diet, appropriately sized companions and enough space for each pair are the foundations of long-term care. Consistency matters more than chasing extreme water parameters, and a calm layout helps this elegant cichlid display its natural behaviour.
