IMPORTANT
Aulonocara lwanda Albinos is an albino form sold in the aquarium trade under the name Aulonocara lwanda, generally associated with the Aulonocara group from the eastern part of Lake Malawi. Its depigmentation produces a very pale body and reddish eyes while retaining the elegant shape of the peacock cichlids. This variety remains very rare among specialized retailers. Like other Aulonocara, it prefers clean, well-oxygenated alkaline water, a layout combining sand and rock, and a varied diet with a carnivorous emphasis.
General species description
Aulonocara lwanda Albinos is an albino form associated with the commercial type Aulonocara sp. Lwanda, rather than a formally described species under this name. It is a peacock cichlid known for its smooth swimming, protrusible mouth and ability to locate small prey in the sand. Adult males generally become more robust and develop longer fins than females. The albino form is especially sought after for its contrast with rocky aquarium layouts and its white-pink appearance. It requires a spacious aquarium, efficient filtration and carefully selected tank mates, since competition and hybridization should be avoided.
Geographical origin and biotope
Reference countries: Malawi and Tanzania, depending on the commercial locality associated with the Lwanda group. The fish is linked to rocky and sandy-rocky habitats in the eastern part of Lake Malawi, particularly areas known in the aquarium trade as Lwanda Reef or Hai Reef. Its natural habitat includes rock piles, crevices and sandy areas where Aulonocara search through the substrate. Aquatic vegetation is usually limited. In an aquarium, provide a stable mineral layout, open swimming areas and several shelters while maintaining alkaline, mineral-rich water.
Precise locality and local name
The name “Lwanda” refers to a reef locality used to identify this form or group in the Malawi cichlid trade. The name “Hai Reef” is also associated with some fish sold under the Lwanda label. These names are mainly used to distinguish a geographical origin or an aquarium strain. The term albino describes the pigmentation mutation seen in captive-bred specimens. In specialty stores, the fish may therefore be listed as Aulonocara Lwanda Albinos, Aulonocara sp. Lwanda Albino or Aulonocara Hai Reef Albino.
Appearance and physical characteristics
The body is elongated and slightly laterally compressed, with a relatively broad head and a forward-facing mouth. The albino form has a white to creamy pink body, sometimes enhanced by yellow or orange tones on the fins and head. The eyes are usually red or pink, a visible consequence of reduced melanin. Mature males develop longer dorsal and anal fins and a more robust body shape. Females generally remain duller and smaller. The dorsal fin may have a contrasting edge. Adult size usually reaches about 15 cm, depending on sex, strain and growing conditions.
General diet
In the wild, Aulonocara detect small invertebrates buried in the sand with specialized sensory pores. In an aquarium, Aulonocara lwanda Albinos should receive a varied diet based on granules for carnivorous cichlids, small frozen foods and occasional suitable prey items. Meals should remain moderate to reduce digestive problems and aquarium pollution. Highly vegetable-rich foods should not form the main part of the diet, although a small amount of fiber can support digestion. Avoid overfeeding and offer small portions once or twice daily, depending on fish size and filtration.

In your aquarium
To successfully keep Aulonocara lwanda Albinos, plan for an aquarium of at least 300 litres for a group or carefully planned community, with fine sand, firmly positioned rocks and hiding places. Stable alkaline water and strong filtration are priorities. Avoid excessively aggressive tank mates, soft-water species and combinations of Aulonocara likely to encourage hybridization. A controlled diet, regular water changes and open swimming space will help preserve the fish’s health, body shape and albino coloration.
