IMPORTANT
Brachyplatystoma filamentosum, the piraíba
The piraíba, or Brachyplatystoma filamentosum, is one of the largest freshwater catfish in South America. This predator from the Pimelodidae family inhabits the major waterways of the Amazon Basin, where it uses deep channels and flowing water to travel. Its elongated body, very large mouth, and long barbels clearly reflect its hunting adaptations. This species can exceed three metres and therefore requires an exceptionally large environment. Collected from the wild, this specimen is offered in Canada exclusively by Ton.Fish; its commercial rarity is rated as uncommon.
General species description
Brachyplatystoma filamentosum is a large predatory catfish associated with the main channels of South American rivers. It generally lives alone and travels over long distances, especially as water levels change. Its powerful body allows it to hold position in areas affected by current, while its barbels help detect prey in water that is often filled with sediment. In an aquarium, this is not a conventional community fish: its adult size, strength, and carnivorous diet require a specialized setup. Young fish grow quickly, making long-term planning essential. The species remains uncommon in the aquarium trade and is best suited to experienced aquarists.
Geographic origin and biotope
The species comes from northern South America, particularly the Amazon Basin in Brazil, where it inhabits large tributaries and the main Amazon channel. It is associated with deep areas of rivers, confluences, and channels that retain water even when levels fall. Visibility is often low, with brown water coloured by sediment or organic matter. Banks alternate between flooded forests, seasonal beaches, and dense vegetation. In its habitat, the bottom is usually made up of sand, mud, and submerged woody debris. Seasonal flooding shapes its habitat, while current and depth influence its movements and access to prey.
Precise location and local name
In Brazil, Brachyplatystoma filamentosum is mainly associated with the Amazon and Solimões systems, as well as major tributaries such as the Madeira, Purus, and Juruá. Populations are also reported from other parts of the Amazon Basin. The best-known local name is piraíba; the term “filhote” is also used in Brazil, particularly for young fish or individuals targeted by fisheries. The presence of this catfish in a given area depends on connections between channels, floodplain zones, and deep refuges. Brazil’s large rivers therefore form the core of its known range, rather than small streams or isolated lagoons.
Appearance and physical characteristics
The piraíba has a streamlined, muscular body covered with small scales, along with a broad, flattened head. Its terminal mouth is very large and equipped with small teeth suited to capturing fish. The maxillary barbels are especially long and may extend well beyond the head; the pectoral and dorsal fins have strong rays. Colouration generally ranges from silvery grey to greyish brown, with a paler underside. In large adults, the head and body become massive, giving the fish an impressive appearance. Its long barbels and oversized mouth are its most recognizable features. Its reported maximum length is approximately 360 cm.
General diet
Brachyplatystoma filamentosum is primarily piscivorous. It captures whole fish by rapidly engulfing them with its large mouth, often from near the bottom or in the dimly lit areas of deep channels. Young fish consume prey proportional to their size, while adults can attack very large fish. In an aquarium, the diet should emphasize whole fish or quality meaty preparations offered in appropriately sized portions, rather than mammals or fatty foods. Meals must remain controlled to prevent obesity and water pollution. A diet rich in animal protein suits its lifestyle, but overfeeding is a major risk in a closed aquarium system.
Essential data
- River of origin: Amazon drainage, especially the Amazon River and Solimões
- Local name used: Piraíba; filhote in Brazil
- Origin of the scientific name: a combination of Greek roots describing a broad mouth and a filament-like feature
- Etymology of the full name: Brachyplatystoma comes from the Greek brachys, short, platys, broad, and stoma, mouth; filamentosum means filamentous or bearing filaments
- Common/vernacular names: Piraíba, piraiba, filhote, giant catfish
- Family: Pimelodidae
- Subfamily: Pimelodinae
- Name pronunciation: bra-kee-plat-iss-TOH-mah - fil-ah-men-TOH-soum
- Discovery: Martin Heinrich Carl Lichtenstein, 1819
- Maximum adult size: approximately 360 cm
- Water temperature and pH: approximately 24 to 29 °C; pH generally 5.5 to 7.5
- Waterway appearance and surrounding vegetation: large, often turbid channels, wooded banks, flooded forest, and submerged woody debris
- Typical tankmates: Arapaima gigas, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, Oxydoras niger, Astronotus ocellatus
- Temperament and behaviour: predatory, generally solitary, powerful swimmer, and most suited to very large open spaces
- Water depth: deep channels and near-bottom areas; depth varies with the season
- Sexual dimorphism: no reliable external feature commonly used in aquarium keeping
- Bottom structure and flow: sand, mud, and submerged wood; moderate to strong flow depending on the channel
In your aquarium
Keeping Brachyplatystoma filamentosum requires a public aquarium, a very large professional facility, or an exceptionally well-planned private project. A standard home aquarium quickly becomes unsuitable for a fish that can reach several metres. Oversized filtration, highly oxygenated water, a layout free of sharp structures, and a carefully controlled carnivorous diet are essential. Because this is a wild-collected animal, acclimation and quarantine should receive particular attention. Its status as exclusive to Ton.Fish in Canada also highlights the specialized nature of this offering. Future adult size must be considered before purchase, not only the size of the young fish.
