IMPORTANT

Introduction

The Corydoras agassizi is a small South American catfish valued for its peaceful nature and constant activity near the bottom. Belonging to the Callichthyidae family, it explores the substrate with sensitive barbels and regularly rises to the surface to gulp air. Its body displays a dark reticulated pattern that contrasts with golden tones and colored fins. This species is very common in the aquarium hobby and is well suited to a mature community aquarium, provided it is kept in a group and offered a smooth substrate.

General description of the species

Corydoras agassizi is a small, peaceful, schooling bottom fish that is hardy when its basic needs are met. It should ideally be kept in a group of at least six individuals, since social interaction encourages natural behavior and reduces shyness. Like other corydoras, it searches through the substrate but is not a true cleaner: it still requires a complete diet even when it collects leftover particles from the bottom. It has facultative intestinal respiration and may gulp air at the surface. Its activity includes exploring the bottom, resting beneath cover and making short, rapid trips toward the surface.

Geographical origin and habitat

Reference countries: Peru and Brazil. Corydoras agassizi comes from the Amazon Basin, where it inhabits calm or moderately flowing areas, including stream margins and places influenced by forest leaf litter. The habitat generally has soft, acidic to slightly acidic water, with visibility that can change seasonally. The bottom consists of fine sand, mud and plant debris, often mixed with roots, fallen leaves and submerged branches. In an aquarium, gentle flow, effective filtration and well-oxygenated water are more appropriate than strong current.

Precise location and local name

In the aquarium trade, Corydoras agassizi is mainly associated with Amazonian collections from Peru and with populations distributed through the Amazon Basin. The most common local or trade name is Agassizi cory, along with “Agassizi corydoras” and “spotted cory” in international trade. Trade names may occasionally group similar-looking fish, so careful identification remains useful when a precise origin is important. For aquarists, “Agassizi cory” is the simplest and most commonly used name.

Appearance and physical characteristics

The body of Corydoras agassizi is stocky and low, protected by two rows of lateral bony plates. Its base coloration ranges from beige-gold to light brown and is covered by irregular dark markings forming a network across the back and flanks. The head is relatively short, with barbels around the mouth that help locate food. The fins may show yellowish to orange tones, while the dorsal and caudal fins carry darker markings. The pectoral and dorsal spines can prick, so this fish should be handled with a suitable net and without forcing the fins.

General diet

Corydoras agassizi is an opportunistic omnivore that searches for small organisms, larvae, worms, tiny crustaceans and plant matter deposited on the bottom. In an aquarium, provide sinking quality foods such as bottom-feeding tablets, suitable pellets and occasional frozen foods including bloodworms or brine shrimp. Offer several small portions so every fish can eat. Food left over by other fish is not always sufficient; feed the group after the lights have partially dimmed to encourage natural feeding and reduce competition.

  • Temperament and behavior: Peaceful, schooling, active on the bottom and sometimes prone to rapid surface trips.
  • Water depth: Shallow areas and stream margins.
  • Sexual dimorphism: Females are generally wider and more robust; males are often smaller and more slender.
  • Bottom structure and flow: Fine sand, mud, leaf litter and roots; low to moderate flow.

In your aquarium

To succeed with Corydoras agassizi, provide a mature aquarium with ample bottom space, fine, smooth sand and several shelters made from roots or plants. Keep it in a group and maintain stable, clean, well-oxygenated water. Avoid coarse gravel that can damage its barbels. Peaceful tankmates, varied sinking foods and regular water changes will support good long-term condition. This common species remains an excellent choice for a peaceful Amazonian community aquarium.
