Brochis crypticus, also known as Corydoras crypticus, is a small Amazonian catfish from the family Callichthyidae. Native to the Rio Negro in Brazil, it inhabits soft, often acidic water in calm or gently flowing areas. Its armoured body, barbels and social behaviour make it an interesting inhabitant for a carefully planned community aquarium. This species remains very rare in the aquarium trade. Available specimens may come from wild collection, so careful acclimation, stable water and maintenance in a proper group are especially important.

General species description

Brochis crypticus is a peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish that spends much of its time searching the substrate with its barbels. It should be kept in a group of at least six individuals, allowing more natural social behaviour. Although commonly called a corydoras, it belongs to the genus Brochis, which includes species that are generally larger than many typical Corydoras. It suits a mature, well-oxygenated Amazonian aquarium with a smooth substrate. Its status as a very rare fish makes careful purchasing, identification and acclimation especially important.

Geographic origin and biotope

The species comes from the Rio Negro in Brazil, within the Amazon basin. This river system is known for soft, mineral-poor water often stained by tannins released from decomposing vegetation. In nature, Brochis crypticus occurs in calm or moderately flowing areas near shorelines, leaf deposits and sandy bottoms. An aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, subdued lighting and wood or roots suits its natural behaviour. Floating plants and leaf litter can provide additional cover and help create a reassuring environment.

Appearance and physical characteristics

Brochis crypticus has a compact body, an arched back and a downward-facing mouth adapted for feeding along the bottom. Like other members of the Callichthyidae, it has two rows of bony plates and pectoral fins equipped with stiff spines. Its overall colour may show greenish to metallic reflections combined with dark markings that vary with age, condition and locality. The barbels should be protected; a clean fine-sand substrate helps prevent damage. Adult fish reach approximately 6 cm.

General diet

As an opportunistic omnivore, Brochis crypticus searches for small organisms, larvae and organic debris in the substrate. In the aquarium, it accepts quality sinking foods, but its diet should be varied with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Do not rely on leftovers from other fish. Feed near the bottom, preferably in several small portions, so every individual can eat. A varied diet supports body condition, growth and reproductive readiness.
