IMPORTANT

Hoplisoma julii: a remarkable small bottom-dweller

Hoplisoma julii, also known as Corydoras julii, is a small South American armored catfish valued for its delicate appearance and social behavior. Its pale body, covered with small irregular dark spots, separates it from the striped species with which it is sometimes confused. Peaceful, active, and relatively common in the aquarium trade, it spends much of its time searching the substrate with its barbels. It thrives in a group, in clean, well-oxygenated water with a soft, non-abrasive bottom.

General species description

Hoplisoma julii belongs to the armored catfishes of the family Callichthyidae. This small benthic species stays close to the bottom and shows strongly social behavior; it should be kept in a group of at least six individuals. Rather than remaining still, it alternates between searching the substrate, moving with the group, and making brief trips to the surface to take atmospheric air, a normal behavior among several Corydoradinae. Its temperament is very peaceful, making it a good choice for a community aquarium. Availability is generally good, although correctly identified fish may be less common than commercial look-alikes.

Geographical origin and biotope

Country of reference: Brazil. Hoplisoma julii is associated with the Parnaíba River basin, particularly in the state of Piauí. It occurs in shallow sections of tropical streams and rivers, where the current is generally slow to moderate and the bottom consists of fine sand, small plant debris, and fallen leaves. Riparian vegetation provides shade and adds organic matter to the substrate. In an aquarium, this origin translates into a need for stable, clean, well-oxygenated water, without excessive flow or waste collecting in resting areas.

Precise location and local name

The reference range lies in the Parnaíba River basin of northeastern Brazil, especially around the state of Piauí. In the aquarium trade and among hobbyists, the most common local-style name is Julii cory, while Corydoras julii remains widely used as the traditional scientific name. Julii cory is also used as a common name in English-speaking aquarium circles. Careful identification is useful because fish with similar markings are often sold under this name.

Appearance and physical characteristics

The stocky body is covered with bony plates and has a cream to pale gray base color. The head and flanks carry a network of fine black spots, with a dark mark around the eye and a dark line on the dorsal fin. The underslung mouth has two pairs of barbels that help locate food in the substrate. The fins are translucent and may show a slight yellowish tone. Adult size usually reaches close to 5 cm; females are often broader and more robust than males, especially when viewed from above.

General diet

Hoplisoma julii is an omnivorous bottom-feeder that consumes small invertebrates, larvae, worms, organic debris, and some plant matter. In the aquarium, offer quality sinking wafers, bottom-feeder pellets, and occasional frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. Food should reach the bottom quickly so the group can feed at its own pace. It does not primarily feed on algae growing on the glass. A varied, regular diet supports its condition, coloration, and ability to reproduce.

In your aquarium

To keep Hoplisoma julii successfully, provide a group of at least six individuals, a fine sand substrate, and filtration that maintains strong oxygenation without excessive turbulence. Include open areas for foraging, some plants, and shaded shelters. Stable water, regular water changes, and enough sinking food are essential. Avoid sharp gravel and boisterous tankmates; under these conditions, this small Corydoras displays its natural social behavior to the fullest.
