General species description

Brochis seussi is a peaceful, schooling bottom fish that spends much of its time searching the substrate with its barbels. It belongs to the group now placed in the genus Brochis, although the name Corydoras seussi remains widely used in the aquarium trade. It generally mixes well with fish of similar size. A group of at least six individuals encourages natural behavior and reduces nervousness. The species is wild-collected and is considered very rare, so water quality, transport, acclimation and feeding deserve particular attention.

Geographic origin and biotope

The species originates from Brazil, in the upper Rio Purus basin in Amazonia. It is associated with shallow areas where the bottom consists of fine sand, silt and plant debris. These habitats provide quiet areas, often shaded by streamside vegetation and fallen branches. In an aquarium, moderate circulation, soft to slightly acidic water and good oxygenation are more suitable than strong flow. A temperature of approximately 23 to 27 °C and a pH roughly between 6.0 and 7.5 are generally appropriate for its care.

The known distribution is in the upper Rio Purus basin, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. This geographic information matters because catfish in the Corydoradinae group can have very similar patterns despite originating from different basins. In the trade, the name Corydoras seussi remains the most familiar, while Brochis seussi is the generic combination used by several current classifications. No widely established Brazilian vernacular name is retained here. Keeping the collection locality with the fish’s records is recommended, especially when maintaining rare wild stock.

Appearance and physical characteristics

Brochis seussi has a sturdy, armored body typical of catfish in the family Callichthyidae. Its overall coloration ranges from beige to grayish brown, with darker markings across the back and flanks. The fins may show dark contrasts, while the underside is usually paler. The barbels around the mouth help it locate food in the substrate. As in other members of the group, the pectoral and dorsal fins have stiff rays that can catch in a net, so handling must be gentle.
