IMPORTANT

Keeping fish in an aquarium requires an ethical and responsible approach that prioritizes animal welfare. Purchasing fish for an aquarium should never be an impulsive decision. It is essential to understand the specific needs of each species, including water quality, aquarium size, behavior, and diet. Only fish with similar water quality requirements should be kept together in the same aquarium.

A Little More Information...

The Erromyzon kalotaenia, also known as the Strawberry Hillstream Loach, is a small torrent loach from southern China. Its flattened body and adhesive fins allow it to live on stones in flowing water. This wild-collected species remains a very rare find in the aquarium hobby. It is suited to cool, highly oxygenated aquariums furnished with smooth rocks, where a strong current encourages natural behaviour. Its diet is based mainly on biofilms and the small organisms that develop on submerged surfaces. Stable water quality, mature surfaces and peaceful tankmates are important for long-term care.

General species description

The Erromyzon kalotaenia is a torrent loach belonging to the family Gastromyzontidae. It is specialized for life on rocky surfaces exposed to a swift current. Its low, broad body reduces resistance to flowing water, while its pectoral and pelvic fins help it remain attached to stones. In aquaria, it is generally peaceful and spends much of its time grazing on available surfaces. Smooth rocks, rounded gravel and sheltered areas are useful furnishings. Because it is a very rare aquarium species, it is best suited to aquarists who can provide stable, clean and well-oxygenated water rather than a conventional community aquarium.

Geographic origin and habitat

This species comes from China, in the basin of the Guijiang River. It inhabits shallow sections of clear, cool and strongly flowing streams. The bottom is generally made up of rocks, pebbles and gravel, with little accumulated silt. Exposed stones support films of algae and microorganisms that provide an important food source. In the aquarium, efficient filtration, high oxygen levels and noticeable water movement are essential. Plants may be used around the edges, but broad areas of clean rock should remain available for grazing and resting.

Specific locality and local name

The reference locality associated with this species is the Guijiang basin in southern China. The most widely used trade name is Strawberry Hillstream Loach. This English name refers to the small loach’s distinctive, colourful appearance. Because of its restricted distribution and limited availability, every specimen should be kept in stable conditions rather than in a general community aquarium that cannot meet the needs of stream-dwelling fishes.

Appearance and physical characteristics

The Erromyzon kalotaenia has a short, flattened and streamlined body, with a broad head and a relatively flat underside. Its pectoral and pelvic fins form a broad supporting surface that helps it cling to rocks. The base colour is brownish to pinkish, with darker markings that create a strawberry-like spotted pattern. Its fins are designed for stability rather than prolonged midwater swimming. Like many torrent loaches, it needs solid, clean surfaces on which to rest. Its adult size remains small, reaching approximately 6 cm at maximum.

General diet

In nature, the Erromyzon kalotaenia mainly grazes on biofilm growing over rocks, along with fine algae and associated microorganisms. In an aquarium, naturally occurring algae should not be the only food source. Offer vegetable-based sinking wafers, spirulina foods and other small foods rich in plant ingredients. Very fine frozen foods may be used as occasional supplements, but should not become the dietary foundation. Mature, clean rocks encourage natural feeding behaviour. Make sure that other fish do not consume all the food before it reaches the bottom.

Essential data

  • Name of the original river: Guijiang
  • Common and vernacular names: Strawberry Hillstream Loach; strawberry torrent loach
  • Origin of the scientific name: The specific name refers to the species’ marked and colourful appearance.
  • Etymology of the full name: Erromyzon refers to a genus of torrent loaches; kalotaenia most likely combines the Greek roots kalos, beautiful, and tainia, band or ribbon.
  • Family: Gastromyzontidae
  • Maximum adult size: Approximately 6 cm
  • Water temperature and pH: Approximately 18–24 °C; pH 6.5–7.5
  • Stream appearance and surrounding vegetation: Clear, shallow, cool and highly oxygenated water; rocky substrate covered with biofilm
  • Typical tankmates: Beaufortia leveretti, Yaoshania pachychilus, Pseudogastromyzon laticeps
  • Temperament and behaviour: Peaceful and bottom-dwelling; often seen grazing on rocks
  • Water depth: Shallow, in stream sections
  • Sexual dimorphism: Limited and difficult to identify with certainty
  • Bottom structure and flow: Rocks, pebbles and gravel; moderate to fast current
  • Availability status: Wild-collected and very rare in the aquarium hobby; this strain is exclusive to Ton.Fish in Canada.

In your aquarium

Success with the Erromyzon kalotaenia depends on a mature aquarium, clean water and a strong current. Use smooth rocks, oversized filtration and excellent oxygenation while avoiding high temperatures. A regular vegetable-based diet should supplement naturally growing biofilm. Since this species is very rare and wild-collected, minimize handling and use a gradual acclimation process. A peaceful community made up of fish suited to cool, flowing water will provide the best conditions for long-term keeping.
