IMPORTANT
Pseudorinelepis sp. L-095 genibarbis, also known as Orange Cheek Pinecone, is a South American armored catfish sought after by specialized aquarists. Associated with the Rio Branco in Brazil, this fish is recognized by its robust body, bony armor and warm cheek coloration. Because it is offered as wild-collected and is classified as very rare, acquisition should be approached carefully. It requires a spacious aquarium, clean and well-oxygenated water, sturdy shelters and a varied diet suited to a large bottom-dwelling fish.
General species description
Pseudorinelepis sp. L-095 genibarbis is an armored catfish in the genus Pseudorinelepis, mainly kept by specialized fishkeepers. Its powerful flattened body, ventral mouth adapted for grazing and stiff fin rays are typical of large loricariids. The trade name Orange Cheek Pinecone refers to the warm coloration around the cheeks and the strongly keeled appearance of its bony plates. In an aquarium, this species needs substantial bottom space, solid hiding places and efficient filtration. Its very rare status makes it better suited to experienced aquarists.
Geographical origin and biotope
This form comes from Brazil, in the Rio Branco basin of the Amazon region. It is associated with river areas where the bottom provides grazing surfaces, shelter and submerged structures. A layout made with large roots, smooth stones and caves is more appropriate than a very open aquarium. Water should remain stable, clean and well oxygenated, with moderate to strong circulation. A temperature around 24 to 28 °C and a pH near 6.0 to 7.5 are useful aquarium guidelines, with gradual acclimation for wild specimens.
Precise location and local name
The reference locality supplied for Pseudorinelepis sp. L-095 genibarbis is the Rio Branco in Brazil. In the aquarium trade, it is mainly identified by its L-number, L-095, and by the English name Orange Cheek Pinecone. Brazilian loricariids are also sometimes grouped under the broad regional term acari, but this does not replace identification by L-number. For a wild-collected fish, retaining its locality information and avoiding mixes with fish of unknown origin are good practices, particularly for a very rare form.
Appearance and physical characteristics
The body of Pseudorinelepis sp. L-095 genibarbis is stocky and low-set, covered with bony plates that give it a pinecone-like appearance. Its overall coloration is dark to brownish, with a warmer orange tone around the cheeks, which inspired the name Orange Cheek Pinecone. The head is broad, and the lower mouth is used to attach to surfaces and graze biofilm, while the fins may have sharp spines that can cause injuries during handling. A rigid container is therefore safer than a fine net. Its key features are the combination of strong armor, a massive body and orange cheeks.
General diet
This species should receive a mainly vegetable-based, fiber-rich diet. Algae-based sinking wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber or spinach, and natural wood to rasp can be offered regularly. Food should be distributed after the lights are dimmed or turned off to better match its crepuscular or nocturnal activity. A small amount of protein-rich food may supplement the diet, but it should not become the main component. A varied diet helps maintain good condition, especially in a wild specimen, while uneaten food should be removed to preserve water quality and limit organic waste.

In your aquarium
Success with Pseudorinelepis sp. L-095 genibarbis depends on a mature, spacious and well-filtered aquarium. Provide roots, shelters large enough for the fish and areas of current where it can hold position. Since it is both very rare and wild-collected, avoid sudden acclimation, unstable parameters and competition at feeding time. A varied vegetable diet, excellent oxygenation and regular water changes are the foundations of long-term aquarium care.
