IMPORTANT
Keeping fish in an aquarium requires an ethical and responsible approach that prioritizes animal welfare. Purchasing fish for an aquarium should never be an impulsive decision. It is essential to understand the specific needs of each species, including water quality, aquarium size, behavior, and diet. Only fish with similar water quality requirements should be kept together in the same aquarium.
A Little More Information...
Crenicichla menezesi is a predatory freshwater cichlid from Northeastern Brazil, where it occurs in the rio Parnaíba basin. Its elongated body and robust head give it the typical outline of the pike cichlids in the genus Crenicichla. This species remains uncommon in the aquarium hobby and is best suited to aquarists able to provide a spacious, structured aquarium with strong filtration. Available specimens may be collected from the wild; careful acclimation and quarantine are therefore especially recommended. In Canada, this species is available exclusively from Ton.Fish.
General species description
Crenicichla menezesi belongs to Crenicichla, a group of South American cichlids recognized by their streamlined shape and hunting behavior. It is a territorial fish that uses shelters, quiet areas and structured margins to observe its surroundings. In an aquarium, it should be treated as an opportunistic predator capable of swallowing small fish that fit in its mouth. It is best kept in a dedicated aquarium or with robust tankmates of comparable size. Its availability remains moderate to low, which adds to its appeal for aquarists seeking a less common species.
Geographic origin and biotope
The species is native to Brazil, in the rio Parnaíba basin of the Northeast. It occurs in tropical waterways where water level and current may change seasonally. The habitat generally includes shallow to medium-depth areas with irregular banks, rocks, roots, submerged wood and leaf deposits. An aquarium intended to recreate this setting should provide several visual shelters as well as open swimming areas. Clean, well-oxygenated water ranging from slightly acidic to neutral is suitable; a stable temperature of about 24 to 28 °C is appropriate.
Precise location and local name
Crenicichla menezesi is associated with the rio Parnaíba basin in northeastern Brazil, particularly river areas in Piauí and neighboring regions. In Brazil, Crenicichla species are commonly called jacundá, a vernacular name used for several species in the genus. The name may therefore vary from one locality to another and does not always provide a precise identification. In the aquarium trade, the names “Menezesi pike cichlid” or “Menezesi cichlid” help distinguish this species from other jacundás.
Appearance and physical characteristics
Crenicichla menezesi has an elongated, fusiform body, a relatively broad head, a terminal mouth and jaws adapted for capturing prey. Its general coloration ranges from olive brown and grayish to sandy tones, with darker lateral markings that help it blend into its surroundings. The dorsal and anal fins are long, while the caudal fin is rounded to slightly truncated. As in several Crenicichla species, coloration may intensify with stress, dominance or breeding activity. An adult size of approximately 15 cm is generally used.
General diet
Crenicichla menezesi is primarily carnivorous and feeds on small fish, aquatic crustaceans and other suitably sized prey. In the aquarium, a varied diet of quality carnivorous pellets, frozen foods and occasional appropriately sized whole prey can support healthy growth. Meals should be proportionate to the fish’s size to prevent overfeeding and digestive problems. Small live fish are not suitable tankmates because they may be viewed as prey. A diet consisting exclusively of mammal meat or feeder goldfish should be avoided, as it can provide unbalanced nutrition.

In your aquarium
Success with Crenicichla menezesi depends on a spacious aquarium, a layout offering well-distributed shelters and effective filtration. Small tankmates should be avoided, and territorial interactions should be monitored, especially when a pair forms. Stable water, good oxygenation and a varied carnivorous diet support long-term acclimation. Because specimens may be wild-collected, quarantine and a gradual transition to prepared foods are important. This uncommon species, exclusive to Ton.Fish in Canada, deserves thoughtful care rather than an impulsive purchase.
