IMPORTANT
Tanichthys albonubes, also known as the White Cloud Mountain Minnow Golden, is a golden aquarium variety of Tanichthys albonubes, a small peaceful cyprinid valued for its hardiness and schooling behavior. Its yellow-gold coloration highlights the species’ characteristic luminous stripe. Native to southern China, this fish prefers cool to temperate, clean and well-oxygenated water. It is best kept in a group in a planted aquarium with open swimming areas. Very common in the aquarium trade, it suits beginners looking for a small, active, sociable fish that is relatively easy to maintain.
General species description
Tanichthys albonubes is a small freshwater fish belonging to the family Danionidae. The Golden form is a captive-bred selection with a more yellow overall coloration than the standard form while retaining the species’ typical features. It is a schooling fish that should be kept in a group, ideally with at least six individuals. It mainly uses the middle and upper areas of the aquarium and remains continuously active without being excessively nervous. Its small size and peaceful temperament make it suitable for a community aquarium with calm species. Efficient filtration, good oxygenation and moderate temperatures support its health.
Geographical origin and biotope
Tanichthys albonubes comes from southern China, mainly Guangdong Province, within the Pearl River basin. Its natural habitat includes clear small streams, creeks and headwater areas where the water generally remains cool and well oxygenated. The surroundings include stones, gravel, leaf litter and abundant vegetation along the banks. Current is usually weak to moderate, with quieter areas near the edges. In an aquarium, it appreciates stable water, gentle surface movement and plants that provide cover without eliminating swimming space. Reference country: China.
Precise location and local name
The species has been associated with the Baiyun Hills near Guangzhou, in Guangdong, which inspired the English name White Cloud Mountain Minnow. In Chinese, it is commonly called báiyún jīnsī yú, an expression that can be rendered as white-cloud golden-thread fish. The name refers to the Baiyun region and the bright stripe crossing the body. The Golden variety is mainly known by its international trade name rather than by a distinct local name. In the Canadian aquarium trade, it may also be called the Golden White Cloud or White Cloud Mountain Minnow Golden.
Appearance and physical characteristics
The body of Tanichthys albonubes is elongated, slender and slightly compressed laterally. The Golden form has a yellow-gold to cream coloration, with a bright lateral stripe extending from the caudal peduncle toward the front of the body. The fins may show reddish or orange tones, especially in males during breeding condition. Males are generally slimmer and more colorful, while females have a rounder belly. Adult size remains small, at about 4 cm. Translucent fins and the contrast between the golden body and lateral stripe make this variety easy to recognize.
General diet
Tanichthys albonubes is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds on small invertebrates, larvae, zooplankton and plant material in nature. In aquariums, it readily accepts small dry foods, but its diet should still be varied. Use fine micro-pellets or crushed flakes as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops and baby brine shrimp. Portions should be small and eaten quickly to protect water quality. A varied diet supports the golden coloration, growth and reproductive condition. Two small meals per day work well for adults.

In your aquarium
To succeed with Tanichthys albonubes, use a mature, planted and well-oxygenated aquarium kept at a relatively cool temperature. A properly sized group reduces stress and allows natural behavior to be observed. Avoid boisterous or much larger tankmates, as well as consistently high tropical temperatures. Clean water, regular water changes and a varied diet are the foundations of good longevity. Its very common availability does not reduce its appeal: the Golden variety remains an excellent choice for a peaceful small community aquarium.
