IMPORTANT
Keeping fish in an aquarium requires an ethical and responsible approach that prioritizes animal welfare. Purchasing fish for an aquarium should never be an impulsive decision. It is essential to understand the specific needs of each species, including water quality, aquarium size, behavior, and diet. Only fish with similar water quality requirements should be kept together in the same aquarium.
A Little More Information...
Overview
Aulonocara OB, also sold as Five Colors, is an ornamental form from the Aulonocara group, recognized by its irregular OB (Orange Blotch) pattern. Orange, red, blue and sometimes yellow markings stand out against a blue or bluish background, explaining its trade name. Very common in the aquarium trade, this fish is valued for its striking coloration and generally calmer behavior than many mbuna cichlids. Like other Lake Malawi cichlids, however, it requires alkaline water, strong filtration and a carefully arranged aquarium with suitable companions.
General description
Aulonocara OB belongs to the peacock cichlid group, in the genus Aulonocara, associated with Lake Malawi. OB describes a color pattern rather than a distinct scientific species. This form is mainly selected in captivity for its combination of irregular orange markings and blue coloration. It is usually less aggressive than many mbuna, although males may defend a small spawning area. A spacious aquarium, excellent water quality and tankmates with a similar temperament are important for long-term success.
Geographic origin and biotope
Aulonocara are associated with Lake Malawi, shared by Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique. Aulonocara OB, however, is a commercial OB form and does not represent a wild population from one specific site. Related Aulonocara commonly use sandy areas near rocks, where they search the substrate for small organisms. In the aquarium, fine sand, stable rock piles and open swimming areas provide a suitable interpretation of this habitat.
Precise locality and local name
The trade name Aulonocara OB does not refer to a precise geographic locality. “OB” means Orange Blotch, describing the orange blotches, while Five Colors is a commercial name referring to its varied coloration. Traditional local names associated with a wild population do not apply to this captive-bred variety. It is best described as a commercial Aulonocara OB rather than as a species or a geographically defined wild form.
Appearance and physical characteristics
The body is relatively deep and laterally compressed, with well-developed fins. Adult males usually show the strongest colors: a blue base, contrasting fins and irregular orange blotches across the body and fins. Females are often duller, gray-brown or silvery, with a less distinct pattern. The protrusible mouth and sensory pores on the head are typical Aulonocara features and help the fish detect prey hidden beneath the sand.
General diet
Aulonocara OB readily accepts a varied diet of quality Malawi cichlid pellets, small frozen foods and formulas containing moderate marine or plant ingredients. Meals should be small and regular to reduce waste. A fiber-rich diet suited to non-mbuna cichlids is preferable to very fatty foods. Mosquito larvae and other live foods may be offered occasionally, but overfeeding and predator-oriented foods should be avoided.

In your aquarium
Keeping Aulonocara OB successfully requires a spacious aquarium with fine sand, rocky shelters and stable, alkaline, well-oxygenated water. Oversized filtration, regular water changes and controlled feeding help preserve its colors. Avoid highly aggressive tankmates and mixtures of closely related forms that could encourage hybridization. Keeping several females with one male also helps distribute territorial pressure and supports more balanced behavior in the aquarium.
